What attracts mice?



Mice are attracted to properties which offer the right level of food or water. The mice will go where there is shelter, warmth and easy access. The animals are attracted by food debris, which include accessible garbage and dirty dishes. Fruit trees may also attract mice along with food that has been stored improperly. People who are living in areas where mice are abundant have to store food in closed containers if possible.

Any outdoor sources of food may attract mice, for example pet food and birdseed. The pet food is particularly attractive during winter since other foods like berries and nuts may not be available. Standing water in bird baths offers hydration to thirsty mice.

Mice come into a home looking for shelter, and if the temperature is cold and inclement weather continues, the mice will find warmth in the building. They will come in using the crevices and cracks in the exterior walls. They see these as an invitation to enter into that building. Wild animals and humans have coexisted since the life on this earth. There has been bigger interaction between wild animals and people in the more recent times due to humans’ extensive development and encroachment on the natural habitats of numerous animals. This means it is more common for people to find wild animals such as raccoons, opossums, and deer on their property. Wild animals are famous for being quite destructive and can carry risky diseases that can pose a risk to humans. The hot water heater in the cold season is attractive to the mice as it offers a reliable source of warmth. The mice may also be attracted to piles of the wood, cluttered garages and old cars.

Mice are able to come into the home using small holes or cracks. They can make their nests in unused corners and live off of crumbs. Sometimes it may even be hard to see if there are one or even two mice around. But if you are not too careful, you may get a full-blown infestation in the home. If you want to prevent the mice from entering into the home, you have to make sure that your place is clean and that you eliminate the areas where the mice may nest and remove any food sources.

Mice may be attracted to the forgotten corners of storage rooms, closets and basements. You should remove the clutter in order to ensure that your home is not that inviting to mice. Old cookware boxes full of pans, pots, glasses and plates can be attractive to mice. Do not leave piles of clothes for too long on the floor. The clothing that is stored in bags may also become a nice area for mice to build their nest. The piles of magazines, other papers and newspapers can be very inviting as places for mice to build their nests.
