What to do about a trap-shy raccoon

In some situations, you will have to deal with a raccoon that doesn't have the curiosity a majority of the species has, i.e. it doesn't want to investigate the trap. It is possible that this particular raccoon has already become familiar with traps as it has escaped from one. In order to solve this problem, you will need to apply different strategies. One can be to camouflage a trap, i.e. hide it in straw, dry grass or grains. The raccoon will after some time become curious and attracted to the bait inside the trap and will relax and go ahead to investigate the trap interior.

In order to be successful in trapping a trap-shy raccoon, you should place more of different types of traps on different locations. Place traps on the locations that you know a raccoon moves often. This is most likely around food sources, i.e. where he finds the food remains (whether its pet bowls on the porch, garbage containers, in dark corners, etc.). You can be sure about raccoon whereabouts by its droppings – these are routes where he spends the most time when out in the open instead of hiding in the nest.

Place traps where you are sure that a raccoon will walk by sooner or later. You can also place two parallel traps to make sure that a raccoon will have no other choice but to get inside of one if he wants to get past them.

A raccoon can also be shy of traps if it is afraid of new situations and elements, especially when it is a young animal that is still afraid of many things outside in the open. In these situations, it is more possible that you will catch another animal that is moving around, maybe some other rodent that lives inside or near your home.

To increase the chance of catching a raccoon that avoids traps, try to use the bait that is most attractive for it. Although raccoons eat almost everything, they prefer sweet foods, especially marshmallows and sweet corn. This will be a good bait choice to catch your trap shy raccoon. Wildlife is the untamed animal’s species and they produce or live in the wild in the region where they were not introduced by the humans. The wildlife may be found in each ecosystem like the grasslands, plains, rain forest, woods and deserts. Even if the well-liked term should stand for the wild that has not been touched by the human factors excluding in most cases, the wildlife has been affected by the human activities.
