How to remove skunk odor from a dog, car, human, and house

One of the things we dread is having to deal with skunk spray. It can happen to anything and anyone. Sometimes a skunk can spray your pet, your car, you or even your house. It is possible for a skunk to enter your house, especially when you leave the doors open. It’s an opportunistic feeder and can look for food almost anywhere it gets a chance to.

Skunk spray is really foul and when anything or anyone you care about gets sprayed, getting rid of the stench can be really difficult. The best news is that you can get everything back to normal with a little bit of effort.

There are tactics that are greatly advertised, but you need to know that they don’t always work. They include bathing in tomato juice, sparing with an orange or lemon citrus pot, and even using masking agents like Febreze or perfume.

Before a skunk sprays, it gives warning signs and when you know what they are, you need to get as far away from it as you possibly can. It usually sprays whenever it feels threatened. It will stomp the front feet, arch the back and then shuffle away. If you don’t retreat, it turns the posterior facing you and then raises the tail and this is when the musky smelling compound is released. This is a spray that really stings and burns. It can also lead to temporary blindness if it gets to your eyes.

Getting rid of the stench

To get the stench off, there is a recipe that can be used and it really helps. You will need one quart of three percent hydrogen peroxide, a quarter cup of sodium bicarbonate, and a teaspoon of dish detergent or liquid soap. You need to mix these ingredients well and then bathe or rub down the victim as best as you can. This is a mixture that isn’t too stable, and so you should use it as soon as you create it. Let the mixture sit for some 5 minutes and then rinse well with tap water. You can repeat the procedure if you feel the need to. If you get sprayed in the eyes, make sure that you flush them with clean water as soon as you possibly can. If you aren’t in a position to buy hydrogen peroxide, you can use a two percent vinegar solution as it can help.
