How to get rid of birds in the attic

It isn't complicated or difficult to get rid of birds in the attic, even though it might seem so. With birds such as pigeons or doves, all you need to do is to catch the birds in the attic and close the entrance points – and your problem will be solved.

The reason why it is important to act as soon as you notice them is because birds are both messy and loud, but their feces can be a serious health risk because the feces can transfer bacteria and viruses that can cause dangerous diseases such as encephalitis and difficult types of pneumonia.

The first thing one must do is to determine how the birds got into the attic in the first place. Birds will take advantage of an opened or cracked window, loose soffits or eaves to enter the attic and build a nest there.

In order to prevent further bird issues, one must safely close all possible entrance points and then move onto the next step – trapping the birds that are already there. Trapping birds in the attic isn't difficult at all. You just need to bait a certain spot with bird seed or corn in order to attract the birds. Once they are used to finding the food in a certain spot, it will be easy to get them into the trap with that same food. When they get used to entering the trap for the seed, all you have to do is to release the entrance door and they will be inside the trap.

Once you catch birds in the trap, you can safely remove them from your attic. Just place a towel or cloth over the trap and birds will stay calm inside until you get them outside and release them in the air.

Now when you have removed birds from the attic, it is important to further enhance the protection of your home and attic. Close all the holes and possible entrance points and attach chicken wire around windows in the attic to discourage them from further tries to enter.

Cleaning is the next important step. Birds create lots of droppings; these droppings are acidic in nature and can even corrode metal, leaving nasty stains and creating serious destruction of your property. Spray droppings with a spraying bottle and then remove the larger volume of the droppings. After you have done this, use liquid detergent to remove the remaining droppings and clean all the dirt and stains. It is important to wear a protective mask, gloves and boots when cleaning bird droppings in order to prevent accidental inhaling of dry materials in the feces, which can be carriers of dangerous diseases.
