Squirrels are very vulnerable to MBD, which is a disease that is very damaging to them. It causes the squirrel bones to weaken. There has been an increase in the occurrence of the disease. Squirrels love peanuts and sunflower seeds, and sometimes humans feed them too much of these. Their nutritional value is rather low. Peanuts in their raw state can be quite dangerous since they sometimes harbor mold that can be toxic.

If you want to feed the squirrels for fun, you need to know that they need a balance of all the essential minerals because the minerals are very important in the maintenance of the best bone health. Squirrels should consume bark, fungi, leaves, fruits, corn, seeds and different kinds of nuts.

While in the wild, squirrels will usually get their calcium supply from gnawing on animal bones and deer antlers. If the specific bones mentioned cannot be accessed, you should visit a local pet store where you can ask more about the bones that should be given to the squirrels. Such people should be able to tell you exactly what you need.

Squirrels also need water. They water requirement actually goes up during the warmer seasons and when they are pregnant and lactating. If you want to feed them for fun, also make sure that they can easily access water. There are squirrel feeders that come with fresh water attachments. If you don’t have this on your feeder, you may select a product designed specifically to provide them with some water.
